On the weekend of Saturday 5th May, and Sunday 6th May 2012, Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre again attended the Vintage Steam Rally held at Cefn Coed Colliery Museum, Crynant. It was the third year of the rally, and also the third year in succession that we hads been there.
This year we had a gazebo to help keep out some of the wind, though thankfully the rain kept away completely this year.

The smell of coal, the hiss of steam, and the loud whistles of these engines really contribute to the atmosphere of the event.
These were a new feature among our wooden craft items, courtesy of Ystrad Recycling, based at the Old Remploy factory, Glanrhyd. Coming in male and female varieties, these wooden garden figures make an attractive alternative to garden gnomes! Hand-made, and designed on site, they are a must-have for every ornamental garden.
The parade ring was where the main action took place, including vintage tractors and the steam traction engines. Here you can see part of the vintage automobile presentation, framed against the old winding engine that forms such an iconic part of a colliery museum.
The YVC Ystrad Recycling stall did brisk business, thanks to the wide appeal of what we stock. From enthusiasts of old tools, to mechanics needing a large spanner, to the garden enthusiast needing planters and birdhouses, to the new home-owner looking at the wooden tricycle or crib, there was something for everyone.
One of the vintage cars, lovingly cared for by its owner, leaves the parade ring. Behind, the steam traction engines are lined up ready for their turn, in the meantime giving off the occasional musical interlude when whistling in unison.
